In a significant step to bolster Singapore’s international relations, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong recently concluded a visit to Berlin, Germany, from April 8 to 10, 2024. This visit underscored the deepening ties between Singapore and Germany, with discussions focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation and addressing global challenges through a multilateral approach.

During his visit, DPM Wong engaged in a series of high-profile meetings with key German leaders. He was hosted by Federal President Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, where they discussed the importance of strengthening the partnership between the two nations. The discussions revolved around various strategic areas including the digital and green economies, which are crucial for future development and sustainability.

The commitment to upgrade the relationship to a Strategic Partnership was a major highlight, reflecting the growing depth and breadth of the bilateral ties nurtured over the decades. Additionally, DPM Wong’s meeting with Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Dr. Robert Habeck emphasized the economic synergies and the potential for increased cooperation between ASEAN and the EU.

DPM Wong also met with key German industry leaders, showcasing the role of Singapore as a gateway for German businesses into the ASEAN region. With over 2,300 German companies already established in Singapore, the discussions aimed at further expanding German presence and exploring new avenues for collaboration.

On the domestic front, shortly after his return from Germany, it was announced that Lawrence Wong would assume the role of Singapore’s Prime Minister on May 15, taking over from current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. This transition marks a significant milestone in Singapore’s political landscape and sets the stage for continued strategic development and international collaboration.

DPM Wong’s visit not only reinforces Singapore’s position as a key player in international diplomacy but also highlights the strategic foresight in nurturing relationships that align with Singapore’s broader economic and geopolitical goals. As Singapore prepares for a new phase under Lawrence Wong’s leadership, the foundations laid during such visits will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of Singapore’s international and economic policies.
